John Olson joined the seminal noise, trip-metal band Wolf Eyes in 2000 and has toured and/or worked with musicians such as Sonic Youth and Anthony Braxton.

Noise has been an experimental enterprise of countless musicians dating back to the late 1960s, so Wolf Eyes have instead opted for a route of consistently altering their music by varying gradations of weirdness. (They call it “trip-metal.” [Editor’s. Note: They now call it “pyscho jazz”]) So you have the aggression of metal, the haunting starkness of industrial, the cerebral contemplations of ambient music, the chaos of free jazz and the propulsions of German-born “krautrock.” And yet Wolf Eyes eludes definitive ties to any of those genres.

“John Olson Says Noise Music Is Over: "Completely, 100 Percent"”

“Over the years, we’ve invented our own language to map out our own sonic worlds. And we just keep drawing from that language—there’s a lot of freedom there.”

  • Bad chop ‘n slop from various media sources - Editor

Doberman is “this Indiana quartet who also had a single on American Tapes. You should not infer from this, however, that there's much harsh noise to be had here. At certain points the sonics and aura get ramped up pretty high but most of this reminds me of the kinds of things that early Throbbing Gristle and their ilk were up to, before industrial music grew beats and goiters. There's nice variation between the tracks, and most of the sounds are murkily psychedelic in the truest sense of the term. There are squeedles in the air, voices emerging from unexpected places, and a deep sense of disorientation. Quite trippy, albeit in a dark ass way.”

  • Byron Coley via The Wire

“John R. Olson (Wolf Eyes guy, Trip Metal pioneer, psycho jazz Michigan motherfucker) +  Doberman (Trip Metal continuum, Industrial night-walkers, Indiana sun-dodgers) = Crazy Doberman  (All that shit mixed up and spread out like ungh).”

  • Inzane Johnny
